Kia ora all,

A) Auckland Emergency Protest: Stop the Massacres in Gaza

(B) 5 things you can do to help save Gaza

>>>>(A) Auckland Emergency Protest: Stop the Massacres in Gaza>>>>>

Auckland, Saturday, 10 January: mobilisation to protest the latest Israeli outrages against Palestinians living in the Gaza strip, gather at 12 noon, Aotea Square. Organised by the Palestine Human Rights Campaign, contact email, and Global Peace and Justice Auckland, contact email or email.

End the Israeli Military Attacks on the Gaza Strip

End Inhuman Collective Punishments, End the Siege

End Human Rights Violations

As the casualties pile up, the world must act in solidarity with the Palestinians of Gaza who face massacres every day.

UN says 13,000 have been displaced since these attacks, that 20% of the dead are women and children, 70 % are without drinking water.

United Nations representatives in Gaza say the horror unleashed by Israel is “inhuman” and the people are “trapped, traumatised and terrorised”. This is what happens when the world’s fourth most powerful military unleashes its arsenal of terror on a defenceless people trapped in the most densely populated territory in the world.

This Saturday return to the streets in solidarity with Palestinians and to call on our Government to condemn the continuing Israeli massacres of Palestinians.

Our Government continues to refuse to denounce the Israeli barbartity, and the rot cause of the present violence the coninued occupation of the West Bank and the continued seige of the Gaza Strip.

March on Saturday for New Zealand to condemn Israeli genocide of Palestinians and in solidarity with those under attack in Gaza.

Your either with us or with the state terrorists.

>>>>>(B) 5 things you can do to help save Gaza>>>>>

1. Attend the protest on Saturday and let your friends and family know about it.

2. Make a donation to support the Free Gaza movement

The Free Gaza movement have sailed twice to Gaza from Cyprus in large boats delivered medical supplies. Under constant Israeli naval harrasment they are attempting again and again to break the illegal Israeli seige of Gaza and take direct action to make the siege of Gaza impossible to continue.

They need our financial support to continue their efforts in delivering much needed supplies to the Palestinians of Gaza.

“We want to break the siege of Gaza. We want to raise international awareness about the prison-like closure of the Gaza Strip and pressure the international community to review its sanctions policy and end its support for continued Israeli occupation. We want to uphold Palestine’s right to welcome internationals as visitors, human rights observers, humanitarian aid workers, journalists, or otherwise.”

“We will not be deterred by the violence of the Israeli military. We will set out again for Gaza. We are doctors, journalists, members of parliament, and human rights observers trying to reach the people of Gaza to deliver much needed aid and witness the atrocities being committed again the Palestinians there.”

3. Sign the Avazz.org petition – GAZA: STOP THE BLOODSHED

With over 400 Palestinians and 4 Israelis killed and the death toll mounting daily, we urgently need to demand that world leaders take strong diplomatic action to end the violence. An Israeli ground invasion is believed to be imminent and would claim many more lives — we must act fast to demand that our leaders act now.

4. Boycott Israeli goods the BIG campaign

The Boycott Israeli Goods Campaign of New Zealand derives it’s mandate from a legal judgment passed by the highest judicial body in the world, the International Court of Justice.The Court advised that members of the International community have an obligation:

Not to render aid or assistance to maintaining the situation created by the Wall Israel has built on Occupied Palestinian Land.

To ensure the Wall’s removal.

Ensure Israel’s compliance with International Law.

That was more than four years ago. Today, the Wall has almost been completed, resulting in the confinement of Palestinians in the West Bank into segregated Bantustans, isolating 78 villages.

At the same time, in flagrant violation of International Law, Israel continues to transfer part of its civilian population into the illegally Occupied West Bank.

John Dugard, UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories stated :

“Israel’s defiance of international law poses a threat not only to the international legal order but to the international order itself. This is no time for appeasement on the part of the international community”.

In 2005, inspired by the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa, Palestinian civil society called for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel until it fully complies with International Law and recognises the fundamental human rights of the people of Palestine.

A specific call for cultural boycott of Israel was issued a year later, garnering wide support.

Among the many groups and institutions that have heeded the Palestinian boycott calls and started to consider or apply diverse forms of effective pressure on Israel are :

the British University and College Union (UCU);

the two largest trade unions in the UK; the Church of England;

the Presbyterian Church (USA); prominent British architects;

the British National Union of Journalists (NUJ);

the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU);

the South African Council of Churches;

the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) in Ontario;

Aosdana, the Irish state-sponsored academy of artists;

celebrated authors, artists and intellectuals led by John Berger;

and Palme d’Or winner director Ken Loach.

We strongly urge you to uphold the values of freedom, equality and just peace for all by joining this growing boycott against Israeli apartheid

A personal boycott of Israeli products helps remove consumers from complicity with Israeli apartheid. As ethical consumers we can conduct our boycott ‘where we are at’, in whatever town or country.

The BIG campaign aims to promote a consumer boycott and to actively campaign against corporations selling Israeli goods.

5. Send a message to our Prime Minister - Condemn the Israeli bombardment of Gaza

Send the following email to Prime Minister John Key j.key@ministers.govt.nz

Dear Prime Minister,

I wish to relay to you the words of the UN General Assembly President and to urge your Government to take a stand and condemn the continuing Israeli assault on the people of Gaza. The position of your Government to not condemn Israel’s genocidal and apartheid policies bring shame not only to you but to the whole of New Zealand.

“The behavior by Israel in bombarding Gaza is simply the commission of wanton aggression by a very powerful state against a territory that it illegally occupies.

Time has come to take firm action if the United Nations does not want to be rightly accused of complicity by omission.

The Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war.

Those violations include:

Collective punishment – the entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip are being punished for the actions of a few militants.

Targeting civilians – the airstrikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world, certainly the most densely populated area of the Middle East.

Disproportionate military response – the airstrikes have not only destroyed every police and security office of Gaza’s elected government, but have killed and injured hundreds of civilians; at least one strike reportedly hit groups of students attempting to find transportation home from the university.

I remind all member states of the United Nations that the UN continues to be bound to an independent obligation to protect any civilian population facing massive violations of international humanitarian law – regardless of what country may be responsible for those violations. I call on all Member States, as well as officials and every relevant organ of the United Nations system, to move expeditiously not only to condemn Israel’s serious violations, but to develop new approaches to providing real protection for the Palestinian people.”
 – Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, UN Headquarters, New York, 27 December 2008

Yours Sincerley,

-
“Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere… and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.” – Edward Said, Palestinian/American historian/political commentator

RALLY FOR PALESTINE – Next week May 15th, will see loud and lasting applause for Israel’s 60 years anniversary while ignoring 60 years of Palestinian dispossession and suffering – the catastrophic upheaval of Palestinian society. The Palestinian al Nakba or “Catastrophe” was not a one-off historical event beginning in 1948, but has been a continuous process of systematic violence, destruction, demonisation and oppression inflicted by the new nation-state of Israel and it supporters on generations of indigenous
Palestinians. Already we have seen Israel given resounding plaudits in the NZ Herald 6/5/08 with no material offered from a Palestinian perspective.

On Friday, 18 April, the day before the Global Day of Action to Ban Cluster Munitions (19 April), there will be protests at the Super Fund offices in Auckland and Wellington to call on the Fund to divest immediately from companies involved in cluster bomb production.

* Auckland: from 5pm to 6pm, outside the AMP Centre, corner Customs Street West and Albert Street, down by the Viaduct. Organised by Investment Watch, for more information contact email omarhamed123@gmail.com

* Wellington: from 5pm to 6pm, at the traffic lights at the intersection of Queen’s Wharf, Jervois Quay and Grey Street. Organised by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and Peace Movement Aotearoa, for more information contact email wilpf@xtra.co.nz

——————————

————————————————————————————————
What is the Super Fund?
The Super Fund is billions of dollars of YOUR tax money invested in heaps of different corporations so that there will be money in the bank to pay for your pension when you retire.

What Cluster Munitions companies is the Super Fund invested in?
As of 30 June 2007, the Super Fund had investments in companies involved in cluster munitions production of around $26 million [6], which they list as Lockheed Martin, investment of $21,850,772 [7] , Raytheon Co. $2,294,974, and Poongsan Corp. $1,582,636. Not included in the Fund’s list are Thales S.A. $657,428, and Hanwha Corp. $139,445 – both of which the Norwegian government Pension Fund has divested from because of their involvement in cluster munitions production. There may additionally be investments in other companies that have been involved in such production in the past, but whose current involvement is uncertain.

What are Cluster Bombs?
While all weapons are potentially dangerous to civilians, cluster bombs pose a particular threat to civilians for two reasons: they have a wide area of effect, and they have consistently left behind a large number of unexploded bomblets. The unexploded bomblets remain dangerous for decades after the end of a conflict.

98% of 13,306 recorded cluster munitions casualties that are registered with Handicap International are civilians. Many of these are children. So if you want to let the government know that your not happy with investments in cluster bombs then come along to the protest.

>>>>>(B) Situation in Gaza Strip (from http://palestinecampaign.org)>>>>>

• 1562 patients need to leave the Gaza Strip for urgent medical treatment.

• 90 patients have died due to Israel ‘s refusal to allow them medical treatment.

According to the latest UN report:

• 107 Palestinians, including 27 children, were killed by the Israeli army between 27 February and 2 March.

• Essential services, including water and sanitation, are close to breakdown because of the combined lack of electricity, fuel, and spare parts.

• 85 essential drug items, have run out. There are severe shortages of other essential medical supplies.

• 30% of the population are without regular water supplies.

>>>>>(C) IMEMC: Israeli military attacks weekly Bil’in protest, 17 injured including 7 journalists>>>>>

On Friday March 28, 2008 scores of residents of Bil’in, a village near the central West Bank city of Ramallah, along with their international and Israeli supporters, took to the streets to conduct their weekly nonviolent protest against the Israeli wall and illegal confiscation
of the village’s land. Israeli troops manning the wall and its gate that cuts off the villagers from their land showered the protesters with tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets immediately after the protesters reached the gate.

17 people were injured including seven journalists. Medical sources identified some of the injured journalists as Fadi Al Arouri, a photojournalist, Najud al Qassem, a cameraman, Moheb Al Bargouthi, a reporter, and George Haltah, a cameraman.

Also among those injured was Eyad Burnat, of the Bil’in Popular Committee Against the Wall, who said, “I was trying to protect one of the village youth who was attacked by the soldiers when soldiers attacked and beat me up.”

The parents of Rachel Corrie, an American peace activist who was killed by the Israeli army in Gaza five years ago, took part in the Bil’in protest. Her father, Mr. Craig Corrie, praised the nonviolent resistance in Bil’in and called for more support for the Palestinians in their struggle for freedom. Rachel Corrie was killed in 2003 in Rafah city, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, when an army bulldozer ran over her while she was protecting a local family home
from being demolished by the Israeli army.

This Friday we had the 127th demonstration in Bil’in. It was also the 30th week of persistent demonstrations and other actions in the south of Bethlehem (There are few villages that are involved in the struggle there and there are usually some actions and demonstrations each week.) As usual the activists of the anarchists against the wall participated this week in both Bil’in, south Bethlehem, Hebron, and within Israel (the single parents camp in Jerusalem, the resistance to expulsion of tenants in Tel Aviv, and the Darfur refugees.

The demonstration in Bil’in was much more interesting than the usual ones of the last two months or so. Before the demonstration was a short meeting as we had bigger than the usual contingent of international activist and a bigger contingent of Palestinians from Ramalla.

In a column for the New Statesman, John Pilger describes his first encounter with a Palestinian refugee camp and what Neldon Mandela has called “the greatest moral issue of our age” – justice for the Palestinians. ‘Something has changed’, he writes, referring to the world view of sanctions and a boycott against Israel.
http://www.johnpilger.com/page.asp?partid=451

(D) >>>>>ISM: Pulling Up Illegal Settlement From the Root>>>>>

August 22nd 2007

Approximately 60 Palestinian, Israeli and international activists joined together to protest and take non-violent direct action against
the illegal confiscation of Palestinian land from the village of Al Mazra al Qiblya. Israel has declared the land state land, despite
villagers’ claims to the contrary. Although Israel claims that the land was declared state land in the nineties, local Palestinians were
never informed of this.

Israeli law requires that a formal declaration be made, which would have given Palestinians the opportunity to contest the confiscation.
Although Palestinians are contesting this in court and plan to challenge this decision legally, settlers have nonetheless begun
planting grape seedlings there for cultivation. Cultivating land is often the first step in absorbing Palestinian land into a settlement.
After the land has been worked on, settlers can claim more easily that it was previously Israeli owned and even if it was not, that
Palestinians chose not to work it and that the land would have been left fallow had they not cultivated it.

At approximately 11am, the demonstrators walked across a rocky hillside to gather on the confiscated land. Upon seeing the way the
settlers illegally cultivated the land, planting young grape vines,they began to pull up the plants. Palestinian, Israeli and international activists pulled up hundreds of plants in order to demonstrate that this land is not for settlers to use and that arbitrary confiscation will not go unchallenged. After approximately twenty minutes, a small group of soldiers arrived. One of the soldiers approached some of the Palestinians to talk. Media gathered to witness the discussion. Witnesses say that the discussion related to the legitimacy of the land’s ownership and the destruction of the crops on the land. Although the discussion lasted maybe twenty minutes, there was no aggression and no one was arrested.

As the demonstrators began to leave, an armed settler suddenly appeared brandishing a camera and carrying what appeared to be an
automatic rifle. The armed settler began shouting at the Palestinians in Hebrew and filming the people present. He threatened the community and shouted curse words in Arabic. A few Palestinians tried to engage him in discussion, however he was mostly ignored as demonstrators refused to allow him to disturb them. As activists left the land they chanted in protest against the occupation and the land theft and made their way back to their cars.

www.palsolidarity.org

–
“Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere… and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding. Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal, a moral quest for equality and human rights.” – Edward Said, Palestinian/American historian/political commentator
Two huge “Voices of Peace” meetings will be held in Auckland on 27-28 July to counter the sudden rise of organised Islamophobia in New Zealand. George Galloway, left-wing British MP & international peace campaigner, will be guest speaker at the Voices of Peace meetings, which are being hosted by RAM, the Residents Action Movement.

“Here in New Zealand we are currently facing the first stirrings of organised Islamophobia, which is a form of racism against Muslims,” said RAM organiser Grant Morgan. “Islamophobia is also the smokescreen for the failure of US imperial policy in Iraq and the wider Middle East. It is rising along with the savage death toll in Iraq of Iraqis themselves and of American and British troops” said George Galloway in a Media Release. “We will not end this new racism unless we end the wars of aggression that breathe life into it. That¹s the message I will be bringing with to New Zealand. And, from what I know of the country, I anticipate a warm response.”
UN officials issued new warnings today about the dire collapse of Gaza’s economy and called on the international community to open crossing points for trade.

At least 68,000 Palestinians have lost their jobs in the past month since Israel closed the crossings out of the narrow, highly-populated strip of land, according to the latest Palestinian figures. The closures came after the Islamist movement Hamas seized full security control of Gaza in mid-June after months of near civil war with its rival, Fatah.

“Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere… and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding.
Five Iranians are being held in Auckland’s Mt Eden prison without charge or trial. Ali Reza Panah (detained 18 months) and Amir Mohebbi (detained now for more than three years despite having 3 young kiwi children) are two of the five. Thomas Yadegary was in a similar situation but was released after a public campaign. The five remaining Iranians must also be released. Let’s make this a protest that can’t be ignored. Please make a big effort to be there. We can’t protest outside Guantanemo Bay but we can at Mt Eden!
the West Bank and Gaza Strip – international, Palestinian and Israeli

Auckland University Students for Justice in Palestine, an autonomous chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, is calling for all students, youth and citizens to attend a rally and march from the Auckland University Quad, at 12pm on Tuesday, March 20, to call for the New Zealand Superannuation Fund to divest from 12 companies that are either producing nuclear weapons, producing cluster bombs, causing massive ecological destruction or committing systematic human rights and labour violations.

 The superannuation fund currently holds NZ$64 million worth of shares in these 12 companies.

Three of the twelve companies are involved in the manufacture of Cluster bombs: Communications Holdings Inc., Raytheon Company, Lockeed Martin Corporation.

Another four are involved in the production of nuclear weapons. They are BAE Systems Plc, Finmeccanica Sp.A, EADS (European Aeronautic Defence & Space Company), Northrop Grumman Corp., and United Technologies Corp.

Two companies, Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Wal-Mart de Mexico SA, consistently and systematically violate labour and human rights in developing nations.

Thye final company, Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. owns and operates one of the world’s largest copper mines in Papua, Indonesia where it uses a natural river system for tailings disposal. Freeport disposes close to 230,000 tonnes of tailings each day, releasing large amounts of sediments and heavy metals such as copper, cadmium and mercury into the watercourse.

We as students and youth believe that not only is it unethical for the government to invest in these 12 companies but also that we have a responsibility to take direct action against staking our future in nuclear war, cluster bombs, child labour and ecological catstrophe until the government divests from these threats to civilisation. March 20 is our chance to show the world that youth and students in Aotearoa/New Zealand are in solidarity with all those who struggle against the US Empire. We send greetings of love and solidarity to the students in West Papua who continue to resist the Freeport mine; to the students in the United States who are organising resistance to the brutal occupation of Iraq; to the workers in Wal-Mart’s suppliers who fight against their exploitation; and to the people of Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan who deal with the consequences of the Cluster bombs which our government invests in.

Our future is not in war, repression and ecological destruction. Our future is in justice, liberation and democracy.

(A) >>>>>Join an eCorrespondance Program with Bethlehem University Students>>>>>

The Bethlehem/Santa Fe (and now Bethlehem/Auckland!) Correspondence Program is an email correspondence program based in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, intended to create a dialogue with students at Bethlehem University in Palestine.

This is an opportunity to learn about the nature of peaceful nonviolent resistance from young men and women who struggle daily against overwhelming odds in an effort to continue to educate themselves in the face of military occupation and oppression of civil rights.

Students who attend Bethlehem University live under very stringent conditions in Bethlehem and the surrounding area. Many of them risk arbitrary arrest and detention attempting to travel short distances to the campus to attend classes. They negotiate many check points as well as the new security terminal that Israel has set up at the entrance to Bethlehem. Their city is now essentially an apartheid ghetto surrounded by a twenty-eight-foot wall and a series of military check points and fences.

By reaching out to students at Bethlehem University you will help to sustain their sense of dignity and provide them with the spiritual and emotional support they need to maintain peaceful and productive lives.

I understand that you are on your summer break (It’s snowing here!). But you can jump in on this at any time. I don’t limit the program to students. Anyone you know who is willing to make the commitment is welcome to join. Though most of the correspondents in Bethlehem are students at BU, we have several correspondents here in Santa Fe who are older, non-students.

If you are interested in participating in the program, please send a brief biography to SJP, at studentsforjusticeinpalestine@gmail.com stating your name, age, area of study and any interests you might wish to share as an introduction to a correspondence partner.

Thanks!
